What they say:
Darkness is moving in, and young exorcist Allen Walker is humanity’s greatest hope against the wicked forces conspiring to bring civilization to its knees. Akuma – cruel spirits born of tragedy and lost souls – lurk in every shadow, willing and eager to do the bidding of their leader, the dread Millennium Earl. With an eye cursed to see evil in its truest form and blessed with an arm to slay soul-devouring demons, Allen stands ready to confront the gathering storm. Should he fail, Innocence will be lost forever.
What this Librarian says:
Adapted from the manga of the same name, the story is set in a fictional turn of the century England and follows Allen Walker, the newest member of the Black Order of Exorcists. The Black Order is tasked with defending people from the Millennium Earl and his army of Akuma – creatures born of machines, lost souls and tragedies – who hide among the people, wearing the skins of their victims.
The Exorcists have one advantage in their secret war, the Innocence, a substance that allows them to face the Akuma head on in combat. Allen’s Innocence is part of his arm, allowing him to transform his arm into a weapon capable of penetrating even an Akuma’s impressive defense. Along with his arm, Allen has one additional advantage over other exorcists, one that came at an impossibly high price. He carries a curse within his left eye, allowing him to see the captured souls in each Akuma. Now it’s up to Allen and the rest of the Black Order to stop the Millennium Earl from realizing his ultimate goal.
The box set for Part 1 covers episodes 1-13. This first collection for D.Gray-Man follows the first few volumes of the manga fairly accurately, only moving one of the standalone stories to occur a few episodes into the series. The change actually works pretty well in this instance, even if it changes how the retelling of Allen’s rather tragic past is shared.
