About the Club

Who we are:
The Southbury Public Library Anime Club is a small group of teens in 6th grade and up who meet on a bimonthly basis to watch anime, or Japanese cartoons with a librarian from the staff.

How are titles picked for viewing:
Titles are picked for the club based on their rating. All titles are previewed beforehand by the staff moderator. All titles are generally picked by the staff moderator, and come from the personal collection of a staff member.

What we do:
Not much, really. We’re a pretty laid back sort of club. We watch anime, eat popcorn, and chat about anime and manga that we like, or just about how the day has been.

Every summer we also suspend regular meetings and hold at least one 5 hour anime movie marathon. A perfect chance to get out of the heat!

Occasionally we’ll run special art classes. I’m also open to ideas for other types of programs. So if you have a thought or an idea you want to share, please email me or leave a comment on any entry.

Some tips for running your own anime club:
It’s really pretty easy to run an anime club; the hardest part is choosing what watch! It can be pretty difficult to choose an anime to watch with your club, and I urge all club sponsors to watch a series completely before going with a title. Even though a title may be rated for your members, only you know your members and your community best!

Always preview the title to give yourself a chance to do any cultural research. Imagine how embarrassing it would be to have something come up and no one knows the answer. Oops.

Also, anime can be expensive to buy for a library or moderator alone. If you have difficulty don’t be afraid to ask members if they have any series they want to bring in to show!
